A search of the area turned up no more evidence of the mysterious figure they’d seen. Skylar didn’t question Tyson further about Dominic and for now he seemed lost deep in thought. She couldn’t help but wonder if the man they’d seen had been the drug kingpin, freshly out of jail and checking up on his operation. If so, had he suspected that Bernie had turned information about the drop over to the police? Even if he hadn’t, he would now. She called the drop-in center only to find out Bernie had already left to see his girlfriend. She both called and texted the cell phone number Bernie had given her and got no answer.

She prayed for the teenager’s safety.

Finally, they hiked back to her car and got inside. Slowly she turned the car around in a wide circle until they were pointed back toward the city.

“I told you about Dominic the other night while we were getting pizza,” Tyson said. “I don’t remember everything I said.”

“You told me that he loved Echo,” she said, “and that he never made it back.”

“Which is all true,” Tyson said. “But there’s a short version of the story and a long one. I told you that we met Echo in the building complex we were securing. We thought it was empty, then Echo came running out barking his head off and warning us that we were in danger.” He glanced over his shoulder to the dog now sitting in the back seat. “He saved our lives.”

Skylar turned her head to smile at Echo.

“We took him back to the base with us,” he said. “But he didn’t really stay. He was a pretty independent dog. He’d come and go, then one day he didn’t come back and we thought we’d seen the last of him.”

He paused as if remembering a particularly unpleasant memory.

“Few weeks later, a group of us were on a rescue mission in the mountains,” he said. “Gavin, Nelson and Ben were there along with some others, including several rangers who’d never served under me before. It was a big operation. Now, the caves of Afghanistan are in some ways remarkably similar to the Rocky Mountains. There is a whole network, like a labyrinth, which we sometimes used to travel or hide in. We had intel that a local warlord had kidnapped a diplomat and was hiding him in the caves. We went in after him. It was a pretty dangerous mission. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s one of the times I dropped the flippant ‘run, boom, die’ line that I now wish I’d never said.”

She reached for his hand, but this time his arms were so tightly crossed, it was like they’d turned to rock under the tension. She pulled back.

“We found Echo in one of the caves,” he said. “The dog was injured and chained up, but it was definitely him. Once we’d extracted the diplomat safely, I told my men that I was going back in to rescue Echo.
